Report: Apple, Sharp Partner For LCD Plant

According to a Japanese newspaper, Apple is partnering up with Sharp Electronics to build a $1.2 billion liquid crystal display (LCD) production line in Japan.

The plant's LCD output will reportedly go into Apple iPods and iPhones. Production is expected to start towards the latter half of 2012, the report says.

Apple has not disclosed which companies supply its LCD screens. However a recent iSuppli teardown analysis of the iPhone 4 called the phone's 3.5-inch LCD display the "single most expensive component," which most likely comes from LG or Toshiba.
